Where Do Our Tax Dollars Go?

The National Priorities Project just released new reports on where our 2008 federal tax money went. Of course, the biggest chunk went to military spending, at almost 50%.

From their website:

With this publication, taxpayers can take stock of how the federal government spent each 2008 income tax dollar: 37.3 cents went towards military-related spending (military and military-related debt), while environment, energy and science-related spending split 2.8 cents

Here is the breakdown for Florida

The median income family in Florida paid $3,832
in federal income taxes for 2008. Here is how
that money was spent:
Military $1,127 (29.4%)
Health $816 (21.3%)
Non-military Interest on Debt $456 (11.9%)
Military Interest on Debt $303 (7.9%)
Income Security & Labor $276 (7.2%)
Housing & Community $146 (3.8%)
Veterans’ Benefits $146 (3.8%)
Food $138 (3.2%)
Government $119 (3.1%)
Education $115 (3.0%)
Environment, Energy & Science $107 (2.8%)
International Affairs $46 (1.2%)
Transportation $38 (1.0%)
